1.1* Scope. This standard defines types of building construction based on the combustibility and the fire resistance rating of a building’s structural elements. Fire walls, nonbearing exterior walls, nonbearing interior partitions, fire barrier walls, shaft enclosures, and openings in walls, partitions, floors, and roofs are not related to the types of building construction and are regulated by other standards and codes, where appropriate.

It is an extract document of Section 7.2 NFPA 5000® Building Construction and Safety Code -- the only ANSI-approved building code that spans new construction and building rehabilitation.
Revised to reflect current construction descriptions and technologies, the 2012 NFPA 220 includes new extracted language from NFPA 90A Standard for Installation of Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems on ceiling cavity plenums and new definitions of 'limited-combustible material' and 'non-combustible material'.
